The BJ Medical College (BJMC) authorities on Thursday suspended three postgraduate doctors for ragging junior students, while leaving one of the victims with ear damage due to incessant slapping. BJMC Additional Dean Hansa Goswami said the two main accused, Dr Dhaval Makadia and Dr Jayesh Thummar, have been suspended for three terms or 1.5 years from the college. Third accused Dr Harsh Sureja, whose name surfaced later, has been suspended for two terms or 1 year. Goswami told journalists that Harsh confessed to his actions and assured that he will not repeat the behaviour. His punishment term, therefore, is less than Makadia and Thummar who denied charges against them. Goswami said, “The anti-ragging committee met victims and the accused as well as nurses and those working in the orthopaedic department on the day of the ragging incident. We found proof against the accused. While Dr Harsh accepted having ragged students and broke down before the committee, Thummar and Makadia did not accept the accusation against them. However, based on audio-video proof against them, the punishment was meted out to them.” The three students are also prohibited from entering the campus, hostel or meeting anyone, said Goswami. She said based on testimony of those working in the orthopaedic department, it was established that Dr Harsh had mended his ways and stopped ragging students for the last four-five months. Thummar and Makadia belong to middle class families of a farmer and a diamond polisher. Being suspended for 18 months will create a major obstacle in their career. Both were just four months away from appearing in the final exam. Their behaviour has already cast aspersions about their integrity and raised doubts as to how they will earn their degree, said officials. Officials at the BJMC said it is for the first time after 2015 that the college management and anti-ragging committee have punished BJ students involved in ragging, to set an example and discourage others from indulging in such behaviour in future.
