For those who love themselves a coffee (isn’t that all of us?), getting yourself a cup of steamy — or icy — inspiration after a particular time of the day can be a tricky affair. We’re aware most cafes close around 1pm or at a push 2pm. And that’s all perfectly well and fine. However, if your cravings for caffeine don’t have any sense of time, this situation undoubtedly causes you some unnecessary upset.

So much so, you may find yourself backed into a corner and considering coffee from some sort of vending machine. Don’t do it — there is an answer!

A mustering of Gold Coast cafes recognise coffee never sleeps and continue to serve it well into the afternoon, and in some cases, the evenings. So, when your mid-afternoon caffeine withdrawals begin to kick in, fear not. This handy list of vendors serving coffee after 2pm has got you covered.

Canvas Palm Beach and Nobby Beach Having one outstanding little arts and crafts-inspired café in Nobby Beach wasn’t enough for these guys. Opting to expand their operations south into Palm Beach, they have opened an incredible café come shop that can only be described as a trove of homewares, candles, clothes, and the prettiest flowers. Need a late afternoon coffee — swing in up till 4.30pm. Need the perfect gift for someone — swing in up till 5pm! Elk Espresso The eternally lauded Broadbeach café that has been in all our lives for so long — and shows no sign of going anywhere! Elk Espresso has always been the place you go to for fabulous breakfasts, but did you know they serve coffee right up until they close at 4pm? Rose Gelateria Should you find yourself in Sanctuary Cove after a fabulous lunch, a mini shopping spree, or even a game of golf, this gelateria is serving up delicious gelato right up until late (9pm in fact). Commune Café If a sunbathing session on Burleigh Beach has swallowed up most of the day (hey, it can happen to the best of us), then your best option for a nearby caffeine injection is this neighbouring local’s fave which closes at 3pm (it’s tight, but we’ll take it!). And if you’re not too late, enjoy yourself some delicious lunchtime specials! Where: 1844 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads

Fixx Café and Lounge See what you could be missing out on when you step inside QT Gold Coast’s open to the public Fixx Café and Lounge? When the clock goes past twelve, their irresistible high tea comes into action with all the trimmings. Fancy a quick takeaway order though, these guys have got you covered until 4pm. Where: QT Gold Coast, 7 Staghorn Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Bumbles Café This elegantly styled café is like a breath of fresh air for Surfers Paradise, and once you see their selection of house-made sweet treats, you may even forget about coffee altogether. Mark this one down as your go-to spot for an afternoon pick-me-up, and you won’t look back. Where: 19 River Drive, Surfers Paradise

South Coast Coffee Co. Being one of the Gold Coast’s best roasters and dispensaries of magnificent coffee is not enough for these guys, oh no. They also have an adjoining café space with out-of-this-world sweet treats and coffee flowing till 5pm during the week (4pm Sundays). Where: Shop 3G10, Capri Via Roma, Surfers Paradise

Merlo Torrefazione (Brickworks) If coffee is a happy part of your life and you can’t see that changing anytime soon, we suggest you pay a visit to these guys in Southport. With pretty much every known piece of coffee apparatus under one roof, you can’t go wrong. They also roast on-site and serve coffee right up till 6pm most days. Where: The Brickworks Centre – Market, 107 Ferry Road, Southport

Ottimo With owner Davide holding a Diploma of Gelato making from the Gelato University of Carpigiani in Italy (no joke), you’d be right to have a sneaking suspicion the gelato here is likely out of this world. And in truth: it is! Mix it with all-day (until 9.30pm-10pm every night) served coffee utilising beans roasted in Italy, and you have a slice of Europe in Coolangatta. Daark Espresso The highly sought-after enclave of Chirn Park simply keeps on impressing. Part of the formula is extraordinary and well-executed cafes such as Daark Espresso. Always dishing up impressive breakfasts and lunches, if you find you need a mid-afternoon break from your desk, look no further, these guys are serving the daark fluid till 3pm. Coffee is the elixir of life. Without it, we would be lost, tired and unable to get ourselves into gear for that nine-to-fiver you just love. There is also the social aspect; could you stand being around certain people early in the morning without caffeine? (shudder) It doesn’t bear thinking about.

Did you know there is a horde of clever Gold Coasters who create their very own coffee roasts for us to love and enjoy right here? It’s true, and we must admit they are extremely good at what they do. Take home and brew up the pearls of their labour or sit back and get them to do it for you, here they are (listed north to south) for your jitter juice slurping pleasure.

Merlo Coffee Torrefazione Escape our subtropical climates for just a moment, and pretend you’ve found your way to Italy at Brickworks in Southport. First Fruits Specialty Coffee Found in both Labrador and Southport, First Fruits believe coffee is an art form. Beans are ethically sourced and of the highest quality, and the team are very knowledgeable on all aspects of coffee. They roast in medium and city roast styles which bring out the oh-so delicious flavours of the bean and offer a smooth, balanced flavour. Silipo Coffee The team at Silipo Coffee use the very best green coffee beans from farms around the world. They’ve been in the coffee business for over 20 years, so they know what’s up when it comes to the perfect brew. Paradox Coffee Roasters Speaking of people who know all about coffee, Paradox Coffee Roasters are all about the journey. They purchase quality green coffee beans from estate farms and co-operatives where farmers receive a fair wage for their work. South Coast Coffee Co. Formerly known as Pomeroys Coffee Roasters, this Isle of Capri based roastery has a strong ethos: Great coffee isn’t created by accident; it is designed to be great from the start. And the proof is tasted in every cup. Multi-awarded with national titles over the last five years, the team take mountains of care when it comes to crafting blends considering what regions beans come from, the altitudes they grow at and what sort of soil they come from. Blackboard Coffee Roasters With almost a decade under their belt, these guys are one of the coast’s best-known producers of fine coffee beans. What they do with them is utter magic. If you don’t believe us, try any number of their products, from innovative biodegradable coffee capsules to high-grade instant specialty coffee — these guys are true thinkers outside the box. And if you haven’t had the chance to delve into their deliciousness, change up your local cafe to one of MANY cafes located across the Coast that offer their beans! Joy Organic Coffee Roasters The conception of this Burleigh roastery came about after a life-changing journey for owners Ben and Patty. They were able to see the good being done with responsibly sourced beans through organisations such as Fair Trade. Today, you can buy deftly put-together blends such as their Game Changer, which has a low acid profile and goes perfectly with alternate milks or their Sundays blend that has a fantastic sweet and fruity taste and drinks excellent as a black coffee. Handsome Coffee You can’t help but smile when you hear stories of people escaping the big cities to come and live their best life here on our coastline. Richie, owner of Handsome Coffee, decided after many years of roasting down in Sydney enough was enough, and a relocation was necessary. Lucky for us! His ethos of keeping it simple and making the best coffee possible is evident in their Staple blend with delicious, balanced notes of chocolate and nuts. Where: Buy online

Quest Coffee Roasters Burleigh’s beloved coffee aficionados Quest have been roasting up a storm for many, many years, and their brews’ quality is always exceptional. Their roasts are hand-crafted and organic and create the absolute perfect brew. Beans are as fresh as can be, selectively sourced, and only the best will do. Their perfectly crafted coffee comes with a side of passion and all of the knowledge, and you can be rest assured you’ll be handed the perfect cuppa every single time. Laughing Pug Coffee Company If their name doesn’t grab your attention, then maybe their innovative coffee drip bags will. Ideal for the next time you go camping — or are experiencing the hangover from hell — you can have speciality grade coffee with just the flick of your kettle switch. No grinding, no mess, and no fuss! They’re also quite the experts on brewing methods and offer friendly advice on how to brew and which of their blends work best with what. Zephyr Coffee Co. Being convinced to take a trip to Kirra shouldn’t take much persuading with all things considered. And this southern Gold Coast roastery and adjoining café are yet another reward when you do. Uniquely Zephyr’s method utilises air roasting, which differs from conventional drum roasting and results in a more efficient process and a more aromatic and consistent coffee product — couple this with the top-sourced beans in the world, and you have yourself a mean cup of joe. Espresso Moto Mermaid Beach Not only content with a successful and popular cafe in Palm Beach, the crew behind Espresso Moto’s fun and dedicated efforts thought Mermaid Beach was lacking their presence. And they haven’t looked back since: incredible eats and Allpress coffee for the win! Where: 1/88 Markeri St, Mermaid Waters

Barefoot Barista Currumbin Already an institution of incredible eats and damn fine coffee in Palm Beach, the crew here decided that Currumbin Beach needed the same. Wander in straight off the beach and enjoy the spoils, folks. Where: Shop 1/794 Pacific Pde, Currumbin

Funnybone Helensvale’s The Surrounds Leisure centre cemented its position as a valid lifestyle hub when this modern and minimalistic styled space opened last January. With the brains behind Tugun’s much loved Good Day Coffee behind the venture — and superb Blackboard coffee flowing — this is a cafe that finally gifted the northern Gold Coast a quality spot to sit, sip and relax. Hudson & Rosie’s Table An ultra-healthy, fine-tuned Asian influenced menu is more than enough reason to visit this Highland Park venue. Oh, and they have some of the best looking and smiliest staff around! Where: Shop 16/106 Alexander Dr, Highland Park

Main Street Providore Next time you’ve fulfilled your promise of an early morning hinterland hike, then you should drop by this little hole in the wall delight. Allpress coffee and hand-baked treats aplenty. Where: Shop 1A/11 Main St, Tamborine Mountain

Seadog in the Park Loveable coffee aficionado Brodie Green caused a sensation when he opened the now much-lauded original Seadog on James Street. A couple of years later, he decided his expert coffee skills needed a tad more greenery and space to be fully enjoyed, and voilà, Burleigh’s best open-air cafe, was born. Dover’s Drop Burleigh town is a busy spot these days. Make an effort to seek out this cargo container style kiosk just off Reedy Creek Road and enjoy great coffee, freshly toasted sourdough crumpets, and a bean bag to lounge in the sun! Where: 7-9 Dover Dr, Burleigh Heads

Papercup Carrara With more than enough adaptations of acai bowls to keep anyone coming back for more, this small but kiddo friendly space is the perfect place to stay a while — or if you’re in a hurry, grab and go. Where: 2 Coelia Ct, Carrara

Well Bread & Pastry If freshly baked breads and all things delicious don’t tempt you to drop by this Palm Beach gem, then their precisely poured Paradox Roasters coffee will. Order something delish, pull up a seat at their window bar, and watch the world go by without a care. Where: 6 Fifth Ave, Palm Beach

Zinc Cafe Kingscliff is an easy and great little road trip from the Gold Coast if you fancy a change of scenery but without a big drive. Just off the sand, Zinc is the perfect place to hit up once you get there, plus you can also snag yourself a table on the adjoining surf clubs balcony for the ultimate view. Cuppa on 41 This tucked-away cafe on Cavill Avenue is a real find. The whole ethos is about community: taking hospitality trainees on as staff and donating leftover food to homeless shelters. Easy on the pocket, there’s great coffee and freshly baked biscuits every day! Where: 41 Cavill Ave, Surfers Paradise

Picnic Real Food Bar Lauded chef and author Brenda Fawdon is the brains behind this cafe come treasure trove of beautiful local produce and sublime coffee. You may think it’s a little out of town, but believe us, it’s worth it. Where: 46 Main St, Tamborine Mountain

Sweet Bambino An inventive menu offering in the cosy suburb of Paradise Point. Nestle in with Social Espresso coffee — and a cheeky sweet version of French toast — on relaxed street-side seating and watch the world go by. Where: 1/46 The Esplanade, Paradise Point

Olive Coffee This cute as a button cafe is a great place to get into some honest tucker whilst in Surfers Paradise. Besides delectable toasties and sip-worthy frappes, there’s also a charming collection of consumer goods for you to take home. Where: 3/3046 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise 

Magnolia Lane Sometimes simple things done really, really well are the best type of things. Drop into Magnolia Lane for delectable breakfast favourites like Chilli Scrambled Eggs or a spot of lunch — once you’ve topped up your tan on the gorgeous nearby Burleigh beach, of course. Raijin Palm Beach Tucked away on a back street of Palm Beach, this is a cafe with a sophisticated and pioneering Japanese style food menu. You have got to try their Souffle Pancakes, fluffy and lighter than air; they must be tried to be believed. Where: 2 Fifth Ave, Palm Beach

Canvas Palm Beach This Nobby Beach institution decided 2021 was the year to expand and move their way down south. This new space is a haven for arty bits and pieces as well as gifts. And let’s not forget a brimming menu and coffee till late. Where: Shop 3/1328 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach

Aperitivo Genuine Italian style paninis have found their way to Currumbin — and for that, you should be extremely thankful. Daily fresh baked bread and tasty treats collide with superb speciality coffee from Niccolo of Melbourne. Where: 8 Thrower Dr, Currumbin 

Santa Barbara Speciality Coffee This Hope Island newbie snuck in right at the end of 2021 and is as aesthetically pleasing as it is brilliant at providing excellent coffee.You also have a chance to grab some appetising provisions before spending a beautiful day on the water. Goya A venue with Osaka’s swagger and Tokyo’s charisma, Japanese comfort food comes thick and fast here with a wide selection of tasty —caffeinated and non-caffeinated — iced drinks to boot. Where: 9/2669 Gold Coast Hwy, Broadbeach

Hazel Espresso In Southport’s China Town, leafy Davenport Street is where you’ll find this cute cafe that packs a big punch in contemporary Asian fused breakfast/lunch dishes.
